Pre-License Checklist
- Enroll Pre-License Video Course - I always recommend completing my Idaho Dealer Pre-License Video Course as your first step. I am approved by the Idaho Transportation Department Dealer Services to provide your pre-license training. Be very aware of the "Free Idaho Dealer Pre-License Zoom Webinar". You may be charged a $149 testing fee. If you do not pass the test you may have to pay the testing fee again. You could end up paying several hundreds of dollars before you are qualified to apply for your Idaho dealer license. I disclose ALL Idaho Dealer Pre-License Course pricing in advance so you never have to guess what you will pay to qualify for dealer licensing. The Federal Trade Commission requires dealers to disclose all prices to customers in advance. I strongly believe your dealer education provdider should be held to the same standards that you are. View my Idaho Dealer Course Pricing page for full, upfront, transparent course pricing with NO HIDDEN TESTING FEES and NO MEMBERSHIP CHARGES!
- Create Idaho Business Entity - You must establish your business entity before you apply for your license. You must be registered with the Idaho Secretary of State, obtain an employer ID number, and an Idaho Seller Permit. I cover this process extensively in your Idaho Dealer Pre-License Course. This process can be handled by a third party for you for a minimal fee. Just click on the "Create Idaho Business Entity" link then click the yellow "Start a Business Now" button, then select "Idaho" from the drop down menu and select the options that are best for you. If you use our Create Idaho Business Entity Link and have any questions, you will be connected to Tracy Newman our Idaho Business Entity Registration Specialist. She can answer questions about your required Idaho business entity registrations.
- Obtain Dealer Surety Bond - Retail dealers need a $20,000 bond, wholesale dealers need a $40,000 bond, and motorcycle dealers need a $10,000. With good credit a $20,000 bond should cost around $150 to $300. With bad credit you can make low monthly payments on your bond. Use this link for my Automated Bond Quoting System. If you click on the "Obtain Dealer Surety Bond" link you will be connected to my automated surety bond quoting system that will match your credit score with the bond company that specializes in issuing bonds to dealers with your credit score. I believe this will lead to the lowest bond quote on the first quote. Use the link to quote and bond in moments. (Please note: The Obligee must be the Idaho Transportation Department)
- Find Location - There
is a location for your new business, you just have to find it.
The State of Idaho requires dealers to location with room for at
least 5 vehicles and a sign on the building that
displays your hours and your dealership name. The sign must
be a minimum of 24 square feet. Your location must be zoned for
a dealer license. A home residence can only be used if it is
zoned correctly and the dealership is in a separate structure or
located on the ground floor with no access to the residence.
Many companies throughout the state have properties with designated parking spaces that will
meet your location requirements. A copy of property lease or proof of ownership must be submitted with your dealer license application.
Use Google or an AI search tool using terms such as Florida Dealer Office, or Florida Dealer Lot For Rent or Sale. You can also check Craigslist, LoopNet, Crexi, CommercialSearch, and Rightmove. Or just drive around your area in places you do not normally go.
- Obtain Business Insurance- The State of Idaho requires dealers to be insured at all times. The minimum amount required for dealers is a garage liability insurance policy. The minimum coverage is not less than $25,000 bodily injury or death for one person, or $50,000 for two people, and $15,000 for injury or destruction of property. I will show you how to find the right coverage and provide links to insurance companies that specialize in Idaho dealer insurance in your Idaho Dealer Pre-License Course.
- Submit Dealer License Application - When you have completed all of your pre-license steps you must complete and submit Idaho Dealer License Application Form IDT 3170. I will show you step by step how to complete the Idaho Dealer License Application correctly in your Idaho Dealer Pre License Course. If you have any questions you can contact the Idaho Transportation Departent at 208-334-8681 or dealers@itd.idaho.gov.
- Dealer License is Granted
- The State should issue your Dealer License in 30 to 45 days.
Once your dealer license is issued, you can then enter dealer
auctions, buy vehicles at wholesale, and sell them at retail.
I really appreciate you considering me to serve as your Idaho dealer license education partner!
