Pre-License Checklist

  1. Attend Pre-License Class - I always recommend taking your Georgia Dealer Pre-License Class as your first step. I am approved by the Georgia Used Motor Vehicle Board to provide your pre-license training and I conduct the Dealer Pre-License Classes all over Georgia. The Board does not currently allow online pre-license educaction so you must attend the four hour course in person. I hold the inperson classes in Atlanta, Savannah, Macon, Augusta, Columbus, and Valdosta so you can find a location near you. There is no test in the course, but you must sit through the entire course. I look forward to meeting you in person and helping you get into this incredible business, Delus.
  2. Create Georgia Business Entity - You must establish your business entity before you apply for your license. You must be registered with the Georgia Secretary of State, obtain an employer ID number, get a Georgia State Sales Tax License, and a local business license. I will show you how to create your business entity in your class and I will also provide links to a third party company that will handle your business entity registration for a minimal fee. This process can be handled for you for a minimal fee. In your class I will do my best to answer questions about your required Georgia business entity registrations.
  3. Obtain Dealer Surety Bond - You must obtain a $50,000 dealer surety bond before you apply for your license. With good credit your bond should cost around $300 to $500. With bad credit you can make low monthly payments on your bond. In your dealer pre-license class I will provide a link so you can be connected to my automated surety bond quoting system that will match your credit score with the bond company that specializes in issuing bonds to dealers with your credit score. I believe this will lead to the lowest bond quote on the first quote. I will provide lots of very helpful links in your dealer training class.
  4. Find Location - Georgia is one of the only states in the country that allows you to have a full retail license with no display lot whatsoever. A Georgia Broker's License allows you to buy vehicles at wholesale dealer auctions and sell them at full retail markup to anyone. And you can do it WITHOUT a lot. Many companies throughout the state have offices they rent that are designed specifically for Georgia Dealer Brokers. In your pre-license class I will show you how to find a location for your license whether you decide to start as a broker without a lot or a dealer with a lot. There is a location for your new business, you just have to find it. The State of Georgia also requires you have a sign on the building that displays your hours and your dealership name. We will discuss your location requirements in depth in your Georgia Dealer Pre-License Class.
Use Google or an AI search tool using terms such as Florida Dealer Office, or Florida Dealer Lot For Rent or Sale. You can also check Craigslist, LoopNet, Crexi, CommercialSearch, and Rightmove. Or just drive around your area in places you do not normally go.
  5. Register for Fingerprints - You must be fingerprinted to show that you have not been involved in motor vehicle crimes. The State wants to ensure they are not licensing anyone with past automotive crimes. It is very important that you first register for fingerprints, then apply for your dealer license, and then complete your fingerprints. When you visit the IDentoGO website, you must enter code 2TGK94 in the Service Code box or you fingerprints will not be registered correctly. I will discuss the correct chronological steps in your Georgia Dealer Pre-License Class.
  6. Obtain Business Insurance-The State of Georgia requires dealers to be insured at all times. The minimum amount required for dealers is a garage liability insurance policy. I will show you how to find the right coverage and provide links to insurance companies that specialize in Georgia dealer insurance when I meet you in person in your Georgia Dealer License Class.
  7. Apply for License at GOALS - When you have completed all of your pre-license steps you must submit your application through the Georgia Online Application Licensing System, or GOALS. I will show you how to do this correclty, step by step in your dealer class. You can also view step by step license application instructions here..
  8. Dealer License is Granted - The State should issue your Dealer License in 30 to 45 days. Once your dealer license is issued, you can then enter dealer auctions, buy vehicles at wholesale, and sell them at retail.
